Wildfires can spread quickly. Being prepared and knowing your evacuation zone can save lives.

Act Early to Protect from Wildfire Risks

Parts of San Mateo County can burn in wildfires, especially areas where houses meet forests and brush. The CZU Lightning Complex Fire in 2020 burned 40,000 acres and destroyed 59 buildings in our county. Dry weather, strong winds, and thick plants make fires more likely.

10 Ways to Prepare for Wildfires

  1. Sign up for SMC Alert to get wildfire warnings.
  2. Know your evacuation zone.
  3. Clear plants and brush within 100 feet of your home.
  4. Use fire-safe materials for your roof, vents, and deck.
  5. Pack a “Go Bag” with water, food, medicine, and important papers.
  6. Plan how to move pets and farm animals.
  7. Keep hoses that can reach all parts of your property.
  8. Clean leaves and debris from your roof and gutters.
  9. Practice your evacuation plan with your family.
  10. On Red Flag Warning days, don’t use outdoor flames or power tools.
