Know the Signs and Act Fast
San Mateo County’s coast could be hit by tsunamis from earthquakes in the Pacific Ocean. Tsunamis are rare but can cause bad flooding along beaches and low areas. The 2011 Japan earthquake sent waves to California beaches, including ours.
10 Ways to Prepare for Tsunamis
- Know your evacuation zone.
- Sign up for SMC Alert and NOAA Weather Radio.
- If you feel strong shaking or see the ocean pull back quickly, move inland and uphill right away.
- Don’t wait for an official warning if you see natural warning signs.
- Store enough food, water and medicine for 3 days and keep your important papers in a waterproof container.
- Know your evacuation routes away from the coast.
- Practice your plan with family and pets.
- Stay away from bridges and low roads when evacuating.
- Don’t go back until officials say it’s safe—more waves can come for hours.
- Know where emergency shelters are located.
